In the days since assuming his presidency, Donald Trump has issued a number of executive orders that have caused great concern and have been repudiated by a broad range of U.S. citizens and institutions, as well as by international leaders. Most prominent are the ban on the entry of Middle Eastern and African refugees and immigrants to the U.S., the order to construct a wall between Mexico and the United States, and the threat against sanctuary cities that refuse to collaborate with the government by turning undocumented immigrants over to the immigration service. This series of orders discriminates against individuals from the Middle East and Africa and endangers U.S. relations with countries in these regions, as well as threatens the democratic functioning of our country. As area studies associations dedicated to promoting a deeper understanding of Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and other world areas, we call on the President and Congress to lift these executive orders.
